少女絹代從關西舉家遷往東京，以卓然天賦和不懈努力，迅速成為松竹蒲田片廠的人氣女優。外柔內剛的她，戲內是溫婉大和撫子，戲外是敢愛敢恨奇女子。她接拍《浪花女》時結識文質彬彬的導演溝內健二，從此締結難解羈絆。多年後，兩人事業在谷底徘徊，決心合作高預算古裝片《西鶴一代女》，賭上前途奮力一搏。

本片改編自新藤兼人《小說・田中絹代》，將傳奇女優前半生烙印在日本影史的跌宕光影中；吉永小百合熾熱的情感投入，體現田中不為人知的剛烈面貌。可惜的是，本片在田中與溝口的合作高峰戛然而止，更大膽渲染兩人關係，卻未拍出繆思告別大師後晉升導演、續寫影史篇章的華麗轉身。

Based on Shindo Kaneto's fictionalized account of Tanaka Kinuyo's life as an actress, the film chronicles Tanaka's career that mirrors the history of Japanese cinema from the 1920s to the 1950s, focusing on her dynamic relationship with her mentor, Mizoguchi Kenji. Yoshinaga Sayuri, the first recipient of the Tanaka Kinuyo Award in 1986, masterfully portrays the legendary actress who exudes unbridled resilience and candid desire.
