文子因丈夫酗酒並外遇，分居搬回娘家，被迫忍受與愛子分離的傷痛。在閨密的詩人丈夫堀卓鼓勵下，她學習創作短歌，以詩句抒發私密情感，正當文子的才華受到文壇矚目，她卻接獲罹患乳癌的噩耗。冰冷手術刀割除她身為女人的身體象徵，病魔威脅仍如影隨形，文子選擇直視死亡、袒露欲望，在人生末路縱情逐愛。

田中絹代閱讀 31 歲離世的詩人中城文子傳記後深受感動，力邀女編劇田中澄江合作，無畏描繪身體病痛和情欲張力，從純粹女性角度書寫「為自己而活的女人」，細膩分鏡呈現主角的陰性凝視，如日光穿透死蔭幽谷，映照女人繁複曲折的生命經驗，藝術成就堪稱影史殿堂級作品。

The film recounts the tragic tale of Nakajo Fumiko, a tanka poet whose life is cut short by breast cancer, exploring her pain of separation from her son after divorce, and her final love affair while battling the terminal illness. Tanaka actively adapts the original biography and hires female writer Tanaka Sumie to pen the script, demonstrating her commitment to films that are "made by and for the women."
