賈克貝克師承詩意寫實派大師尚雷諾瓦，早逝的他無緣參與法國新浪潮，卻深受楚浮等《電影筆記》派影人激賞。本片為貝克抱病完成的遺作，劇情改編自 1947 年的真實事件，更找來當年越獄主謀等非職業演員參演，以凝煉的長鏡頭、細膩的場面調度，將越獄歷程拍得令人屏息，被梅爾維爾譽為史上最偉大的法國電影。

Four prisoners hatch a plan to dig a hole and break away from the jail. When a new inmate is moved into their cell, they take a risk and share their plan with the newcomer. Over the course of three days, this group of friends penetrate the concrete floor and make their way through the sewer system, yet their escape is anything but assured.
