沖繩的安豆味王族有個古老傳說：「當天空浮現黑色的山，將有怪獸毀滅世界，但當紅色的月亮浮出，太陽從西邊升起時，將出現兩隻怪獸拯救世界。」真哥吉拉的現身拆穿了於富士山上肆虐的假哥吉拉。假哥吉拉竟是外星人藏匿於沖繩地底、以宇宙鈦金屬製造的機械哥吉拉。眾人若要拯救世界，必須喚醒沈睡中的沖繩西薩王，與哥吉拉並肩作戰！

1972年，沖繩主權回歸日本，劇組選擇當地作為主要場景，並請來台灣女演員鄭秀英飾演安豆味王族後裔的決定，頗具觀光宣傳。機械哥吉拉深受觀眾喜愛，使東寶翌年順勢推出續集《機械哥吉拉的逆襲》，機械哥吉拉因而成為終結「昭和哥吉拉」時代的最後一隻反派怪獸。

The Azumi tribe of Okinawa has an ancient prophecy: "When a black mountain appears above the clouds, a giant monster will emerge and destroy the world; but when the red moon sets and the sun rises from the west, two monsters shall appear to save the planet." The fake Godzilla is revealed to be Mechagodzilla, a superweapon made by the aliens who will conquer the earth unless King Caesar is summoned to fight with the real Godzilla.
