1994年，林懷民帶著諾貝爾文學獎得主，赫曼．赫塞根據佛傳改編的小說「流浪者之歌」（又名「悉達多求道記」），到佛陀得道的菩提迦耶朝聖，歸來後，編作了這齣舞作。他從亞洲各地的宗教儀式汲取靈感，透過舞蹈，把古老的祭儀轉化為當代劇場的祭典。

自始至終，九十分鐘的演出裡，一位身著白色袈裟的僧人，一動也不動地站在舞台左下角。自始至終，黃金稻穀像沙漏一樣汨汨流下，打在他的光頭，打在他合十的雙手，在他腳下堆積出愈來愈高的穀丘。

黃金稻穀在舞台上成丘成河，如驟雨降落，如沙漠開展。一群衣衫襤褸的流浪者，手執樹杖，沉緩步入這黃金風景，進行朝聖之旅。對照著不動如山的僧人，朝聖者俯身趴地，虔誠祈禱，或激烈苦行，演出各種求道的法門。首演於1994年11月4日。

A monk stands still at a downstage corner throughout the 90-minute performance, while a shimmering stream of rice grains showering from above and onto his shaved head. Golden rice grains on stage transform from a river to hills to a desert. Rice grains shower like a summer storm and waterfalls. Onto this landscape, dancers in ragged garb holding a tall staff, move slowly in a pilgrim journey. In contrast to the immobility of the standing monk, they piously prostrate, or fiercely whip their own bodies, in a hope to acquire peace.

Inspired by the wealth of religious practices found throughout Asia, and Herman Hesse’s account of Siddhartha’s quest for enlightenment, LIN Hwai-min transforms ancient rites into a resonant dance theatre.
