Turumba

Philippines|1981|16mm|Colour|87min

The plot is set in a less developed Philippine village, Pakil. For the villagers, participating in the Turumba festival is the most important thing of the year. This event, mixed with the Catholic and local customs, has been organized for more than 200 years. Kadu's father, Romy, taking care of the music of the festival, is the key person of the festival. The family's traditional occupation is making papier mâché animals for Turumba. Everything changes when a German woman buys hundreds of figurines to sell in her country. Thanks to this huge order, Romy's family enjoys electricity and electric fans that others envy. However, working under time pressure on their jungle assembly line, the family becomes virtual slaves to the ‘modern’ industry.
