淑惠在舞廳賣唱，拉拔妹妹淑清考進藥廠。淑清戀上開朗的玻璃部主任，時常與姐姐分享彼此的戀愛心事，卻在 5 月 13 日迎城隍這天，發現兩人竟愛上同一人。淑清憤而離家，並捲入一宗兇殺命案。原創劇本藉著陰錯陽差的愛情和兇殺，使嬌生慣養的妹妹一夕長大，是台灣電影描寫女性心境成長的先驅。

Following their mother's death, Siok-hui sings in a nightclub to support her younger sister, Siok-tshing, though her sister disapproves of her occupation. Siok-tshing starts working in a pharmaceutical company and has a crush on her colleague, Bun-pin. But Bun-pin is passionately in love with Siok-hui. Attending a celebration, Siok-tshing learns the truth. While drowning her sorrows in alcohol, she is forcibly taken to a hotel by a lascivious businessman also obsessed with Siok-hui. When Siok-hui rushes to the hotel, she finds the man lying in a pool of blood.
