Khue-guan, a deliveryman, lives in a cheap apartment and dreams of making it big. He chances upon a teenage runaway, Tsing-bi, and entices her to work in a nightclub to make money for him. The nightclub hostess, Giok-sian, supports Khue-guan financially in return for casual relations. When Tsing-bi becomes pregnant by Khue-guan, she asks for marriage but he refuses. Instead, he proposes to Giok-sian but she rejects him. Khue-guan must decide between love and money. A capitalist society in decay, as told through the relationships of a prostitute, pimp and procuress.
