本片改編自鄭豐喜的自傳小說《汪洋中的一條船》。鄭豐喜自小不良於行，生活困苦但勤學有成，大學時期與法律系同學吳繼釗相識，吳被他的奮鬥精神所感動，兩人衝破阻力相戀結婚。

由人氣童星歐弟與當紅的秦漢分別飾演童年與成年的鄭豐喜，林鳳嬌飾演鄭夫人。這是李行再度回歸寫實路線之作，並以此片及《小城故事》、《早安台北》, 連續獲得1978至1980年的金馬獎最佳劇情片，創下臺灣電影史上至今無人能破的紀錄，達到李行導演生涯的巔峰。

Lee Hsing returned to the realistic style in this film. Together with two other films, The Story of a Small Town and Good Morning, Taipei, Lee won the Golden Horse Awards for Best Picture in three consecutive years.

The film is based on the real story of Zheng Fengxi. Zheng was a disabled author who overcame both physical and monetary harsh conditions in his life. He studied hard since childhood, and finally, he graduated from college.The film features Chin Han as Zheng and Joan Lin as his wife, Wu Jizhao.
