本片為中影公司出品的彩色古裝悲劇，改編自知名劇作家姚一葦的作品，是姚一葦以宋代京本通俗小說《碾玉觀音》為本改寫之同名劇作。敘述北宋韓郡王之女秀秀與有雕刻藝術天份的表哥崔寧，兩人淒美坎坷的戀愛遭遇。

李行導演又一次塑造一個藝術家形象，並以甫自美國學成的陳耀圻（當時藝名陳寧）飾演男主角崔寧，臺語片紅星白蘭擔任女主角，本片更獲得國學大師林語堂先生誇讚營造意境極美。

The story is based on a play written by famous playwright Yao Yiwei whose work takes adaptation from the novel in Sung Dynasty. The film describes Xiuxiu, a daughter of an aristocrat,who falls in love with her cousin who is a talented sculptor. Nevertheless they experience all kinds of difficulties during the process of trying to get married.

Director Lee Hsing stars Chen Yaoji, a young film director, who returned to Taiwan from the USA as a leading man, and once again depicts the life of an artist. The film receives acclaim for its poetic images.
