本片為四位新銳導演拍攝的集錦電影，包括陶德辰執導的《小龍頭》、楊德昌的《指望》、柯一正的《跳蛙》 及張毅的《報上名來》，道出了童年的天真寂寞、少女的情竇初開、青年的熱情奔放、成年的無奈回望，共同訴說了一段完整的人生故事。如此作法堪稱開創臺灣新電影先河。

「那種（初潮到來的）無助是個重點。那東西不是感性，是很理性的，所以處理時要感性跟理性互動，才會有新的感覺。因為感性的東西都是已經實現過的東西，那是你的經驗，加上理性之後可以開拓你經驗之外的東西，而這個經驗之外的東西才有意思。」導演楊德昌如此表示。

This anthology film, directed by four emerging filmmakers, includes Jim Tao’s Little Dragon Head, Edward Yang’s Expectation, Ko I-Chen’s Leap Frog, and Chang Yi’s Say Your Name. Together, the four stories capture the innocence and solitude of childhood, the first stirrings of love in adolescence, the passion and recklessness of youth, and the wistful reflections of adulthood, together telling a complete story of life. This approach marked a groundbreaking beginning for the Taiwan New Wave movement.

Director Edward Yang remarked: “That sense of helplessness that comes with [the arrival of menarche] is key. It’s not emotional; it’s highly rational. So when handling it, you need an interplay between emotion and reason to create something new. Pure emotion is always drawn from lived experience. But once you add reason to it, you can reach beyond your own experiences, and that’s where it becomes meaningful.”
