紐約房仲高偉同與男友賽門同居，不斷受到遠在臺灣的父母催婚壓力。為解決麻煩，賽門提議偉同與中國女房客威威假結婚，幫助她取得綠卡，同時應付父母。不料，偉同父母竟親自來美參加婚禮，偉同和威威只好假戲真做，卻意外擦出火花，甚至導致威威懷孕⋯⋯本片為李安第二部長片，以華人家族倫理角度切入同性情感，成功在國際影壇嶄露頭角。
