1. 人算 Calculations
Taiwan|1991|16mm|Color|Sound|5min
Wedding Picture
Taiwan|1992|16mm|Color|Sound|14min
3. 03:04
Taiwan|2000|35mm to digital|Color|Sound|16min
The sound of billiard balls on a table, a montage series from television shows, steam rising from a bowl of instant noodles, reflections in the window of a public bus, a sun dressed in drab army green, daze caused by intermittent sleep, and the words hidden in a telephone card. The old wait for their coffins, the young wait to leave the island, the recruits wait and count the number of days before discharge, the rocks wait for people to come back, and I wait for the end of the film.
Nail
Taiwan|2002|35mm to digital|B&W|Sound|45min
Emerging from the clean, spacious, air-conditioned metro station of Long-Shan Temple, the unwitting traveler is immediately plunged into sensory overload, for this district of Taipei City is a heady mixture of the old, the new and the downright kitsch. Amidst the flashing neon lights, ethnic food, prostitutes and their aged female pimps, dwells the Temple of Long-Shan, an architectural blend of the ornate, the garish and the traditional. The temple is frequented mostly by the elderly, slumbering, murmuring in hushed and not-so-hushed voices and restlessly wafting fans to expel the oppressive heat. With an irreverence only afforded the old, they pay scant attention to Time, squandering it in idle gossip, nonchalant about its inevitable conclusion, They look on with bemusement and fascination at the foreigners and day-trippers who make a pilgrimage to the temple, jostled along by the crowd.
The Elephant Dancer
Taiwan|2018|Video|Color|Sound|22min
Everyone has childhood memories of a zoo. The 1950s were a paradise with monkeys riding bicycles and lions jumping through rings of fire. Animals of today are placed in an artificial, "virtual" natural environment, and are subjugated as "humanised" animals. They lose their natural habits and become physically and mentally warped. As we see elephants dancing, does this signify happiness, anxiety, or a bottomless pit?
About the filmmaker:
Ting-Fu HUANG (b. 1961) studied television production and worked as an archivist. Since 1985 he's been a passionate documentarist; he shot his first film with an 8mm camera. He's interested in questions of human emotions and types of behavior in various habitats.
