This film explores the fear, thrill, and beauty of ski-jumping. At its heart is Walter Steiner, a 20-year-old world champion who pushes the limits of human flight in a sport where triumph and tragedy are separated by a razor-thin line. Directed by Werner Herzog, the film captures Steiner's solitary preparation and the perilous allure of each jump, using groundbreaking slow-motion footage to reveal the breathtaking intensity of those five seconds that define a decade of training.

The mountaineers Rheinhold Messner and Hans Kammerlander want to accomplish the still-unfinished ascent of Gasherbrum I and II in the Himalayas. Werner Herzog accompanies the two men on their adventure to understand their motivation. In their high-altitude camp, the two climbers open up to the camera. Messner speaks about his relationship with danger and death, calm and determined. Messner and Herzog discover that they share the same dream.
