1943年，在日本佔領下的東北紛亂不安，沈韶華(林青霞飾)因早戀被父親關在閣樓，只能將被壓抑的情感注入寫作中，年復一年，韶華成了一位小有名氣的作家。父親過世後，韶華繼續寫作，進而結識了文化官員章能才(秦漢飾)，兩人更墜入情網，並和韶華情同姐妹的好友月鳳(張曼玉飾)三人一起度過了一段和樂的時光。

抗戰勝利後，韶華和能才不得已而分手，當她費盡心力找到能才時，卻發現他與別的女人同居，韶華憤怒離去，不久後國共內戰爆發，動盪的時局改變了所有人的命運…

Yuhua gets locked up at home by her father because of her relationship with a classmate. She pours all her suppressed emotions into writing and becomes a well-known novelist. She meets and falls in love with Zhang Nengcai, a Chinese official who collaborates with the Japanese. They enjoy a brief period of happiness. After Japan is defeated, Yuhua and Nengcai are forced to part ways.
